Works Great and Not Too Big

All sensors seem to function without an issue. Calibrated the baro to local adjusted pressure and it stays on track. Highgear has a very informative website. The battery is easily replaceable. Have only taken showers with it but I don't plan to dunk it in deep water.

Excellent

The only con is the back light turns off too fast.

This is a decent product. The temperature, compass, and barometric pressure readings are very accurate (Keep in mind the temperature reading is about 10 degrees F higher than ambient temp when the watch is worn). The watch does not provide an accurate measure of altitude below 1000ft but that is not surprising since it relies on changes in atmospheric pressure to give the reading. All the features work well and the watch is attractive. It's very light and easy to wear. My only complaint is its thickness and one of the reasons I don't wear it all the time. It is roughly 1cm thick and it is much thicker than I am accustomed to wearing. I guess they need the room to put in all the technology associated with the features. Thinner would be more attractive though.
cool, but klunky...

Reviewer: Monica Gellar,
I purchased this watch for my husband's birthday--since it was an REI Expert Pick and he is an REI fan...
The watch has cool features and all, but its really thick. It's having a Dell XPS on your wrist.
He works with computers, but has to take it off because it gets caught on everything.
He's also a triathlete, boy, did I get him the wrong one.
Good, not perfect.

I have this watch for about 6 months and I like it a lot. Few comments are:

Good:
- The watch is pretty accurate (I just calibrated my compass one time and, even traveling a lot, it has worked perfectly);
- The size is not so big. I'm man but even in my wife's arm it fits well;
- It has a beautiful design.

Bad:
- The materials are not the best (the center button does not work anymore and the ring, used to calibrate the compass, seems to be locked right now).

Why am I giving 4 stars? I had different watchs from Suunto, all of them more expensive and bigger than this one. The size and the "all information in one screen (time, date, temperature and weather forecast are shown together)", plus the update Highgear did in the past months make this watch the best value for the money (an besides, I paid only $80 at Amazon website).
Geek watch for a Light Day Hiker

Review Date: September 28, 2006

I'm a Light DayHiker, that chooses to hike trails to waterfalls and
peaks/summits with a view. The feature I like best about this watch is
the ALTIMETER, current altitude, total accumulation, and max, and
uses bar-graph to 'chart' the accent/decent. The watch also has many
other features like : 2-timezones, 12/24-hr format, MM/DD/YY format,
temperature F/C, chronograph, alarm, barometer, digital compass.
The instruction manual is easy to use(but very small print) and available on
HighGear webpage in PDF format (larger print to read) and enclosed mini-dvd with instructions.
ONLY reason I didnt give it 5-stars is, there are 5 diff buttons (S)
for setting, and they "dont lock", so if bump any of the buttons
(yes need to hold a few secs) the settings can change. (has happened
a few times as I wear it on the inside of my wrist). I know almost
every watch out there uses the "hold-to-set" feature, but there should
also be a feature like on my cell phone (lock keypad) where it's a
combination of pressing 2-buttons to unlock, then use the "hold-to-set".

A beautiful watch with a big screen. It has many functions that a camper will need. I only have two complaints. 1. it cannot show the month. It's pretty inconvenient for me. 2, The manual said that the battery of the watch can only run about 1 year. Is that too short?

Bought this off of Campmor for 80$. Once you set your local elevation the weather prediction is pretty on top of things. It will forecast probable weather patterns for the upcoming 6 hours. The compass is damn good as well, just be sure to calibrate it daily if you want really good readings. the thermometer doesnt work when it's in conctact with your skin cause the metal watch frame picks up body heat easily but if you hang it off a belt or backpack for 30 minutes you'll know exactly what temperature it is.
Excellent watch

I've worn this watch for over 2 and a half yrs now. It's always been accurate and easy to use, and I only now changed the battery because the backlight wasn't as bright as it once was. My watch has taken every kind of abuse you can imagine and held up well, it may be large and heavy, but it's sturdy as well. Highly recommend this watch.
Not so good

Reviewer: Daniel R. Gilbert, San Rafael, CA
I have unfortunately gone through a few of these watches. Problems with my watch have been the following:
1. Backlight burns out frequently
2. Poor quality on the wrist band
3. Can't remove battery on your own, you have to send it back to the manufacturer or spend obscene amounts of money to have a watch maker do it (this feature has been remedied on newer models.

The concept of this watch is great, but the quality is quite poor.
Highgear bands suck

Review Date: August 19, 2006
Reviewer: David L. Brown, Charlotte, N.C.
Why do watch manufacturers keep putting these cheap, uncomfortable rubber bands on their otherwise good watches? The Highgear (unlike the Suunto) band is almost impossible to remove, and if you DO remove it, you'll find that it's impossible to even slip one of those The Bands under the pins, and then you'll find that it's also impossible to put the rubber watch band back on once you've failed to upgrade it. At least the Suunto manufacturer offers a little kit that makes it VERY easy to put a really nice velcro band on their watches. Once I wear out or break my brand-new Highgear, I'll be going back to the Suunto.
Functional but not very water resistant

Review Date: July 28, 2008
Reviewer: L. Paton,
I bought this watch for my son. He loves all the gadgets. However
after a week of camping in the rain the watch has condensation on the
inside. It's supposed to be water resistant to 30m so this seems to
be a defect.

All other functions seem to work as advertised. We still need to hike
up a mountain to test the altimeter.

Nice watch with easy to read numbers however having problems with the Altimeter and Compass. You have to go through a lot of steps to calibrate and you must calibrate these every day. Temperature is not accuate as it does not compensate for body temp.

the time and date is easy to read and checking time in the dark with the glow numbers is neat. I haven't figured out how to use the barometer, altimeter or digital compass. maybe i didn't following the directions correctly when i first got the watch. it doesn't seem to be very accurate. Having a watch with all these features sounds really cool. if you don't have to use the features and your getting it to just say that you have a watch with all theses features then go for it. If you do need to use the features then i suggest on passing up on this one for a more accurate watch.
How to replace battery on older Axis

Review Date: June 24, 2007
Reviewer: T. Link,
Battery replacement on the older models appears to be near impossible, but here's how I figured out how to do it. It's tricky and you run the risk of damaging the unit. To replace battery:
0. Don't buy watch and stop reading, but if you already have one and the battery is toast:
1. Remove tiny screws on back of watch.
2. Carefully pry metal backplate up with a thin knife near where the band connects (the gasket is farther from the edge at this point), just enough to slip a small, sturdier screwdriver under plate. Careful not to insert the knife too far or you'll nick the gasket inside, or jam it into the electronics. You'll likely nick the outer edge of the watch which will give it more character and charisma.
3. Twist the screwdriver just enough to lift the backplate a few mm up.
4. Grab the plate with a small pair of needlenose pliers and pull up and away from the case.
5. Remove even tinier screw that holds the flimsy metal cover over the battery.
6. Invert and tap the cover and battery out.
7. Replace dead battery with new CR2032.
8. Re-assemble, and note "Smart Outdoor Products" logo on the backplate. Marvel at this little oxymoronic point, and buy a different brand that is actually designed well when this watch finally dies (or when you jab the brain trying to pop off the back cover).
Ok, but not great

I got this watch primarily for hiking and exercise activities. First the pros: the watch looks nice. The styling is better than that of, say, Timex, and the face is easy to read. But there are more cons than pros, unfortunately. The band looks flimsy. I'm not sure it will hold out under my use. The stopwatch (which I use a lot) is awkward to use -- the lap button is on the side (should have been the face button, because it's easier to get at), and the reset button is shared with the backlight, which makes unnecessary use of the battery power (why didn't they share that function with the stop button?). The temperature reads somewhere between ambient and body temperature. The barometer and altimeter require such frequent calibration that I'll probably never use them. Still making up my mind whether to keep it, or to send it back.

after owning casio, suunto version 1 and version 2's I thought would try a high gear. I bought the best High Gear watch Cabello's had and within 90 days the unit had a panel drop off. Cabello's would not exchange the unit after stating at purchase that it was warranted for one year.
Not sure what High gear will do but in my opinion this watch is not worth the price that is charged and it does not look as if they will back their warranty.
This watch never came.

Product Description

Keep your sports training focused with the stylish Timex T5E231 Ironman Triathlon multi-function, performance sport digital watch, which features a dark gray resin top ring sitting upon a metallic silver case and top pusher for easy access to split and lap times. Sport timing features include a 100-hour chronograph with lap or split option, 100-lap memory recall, 199 lap counter, on-the-fly recall of lap or split, and interval timers settable up to 24 hours (9 timers with countdown/stop and countdown/repeat). The training log stores workouts by date, with best lap, average lap, and total segment time, and the total run format/synchro timer maintains total activity time (less time paused during workout and overall running time. Other features include two time zones, built-in setting reminders, water resistance to 100 meters, and a black resin strap.

It incorporates the Timex Flix system, which activates the Indiglo night-light with a simple flick of your wrist. To activate FLIX, put the watch into Night-Mode by pressing and holding the Indiglo night-light button 3 seconds until it beeps. With the watch in Night-Mode, a forward "flick" of the wrist with a sharp "stop" will activate the Indiglo night-light for three seconds.

The Indiglo night-light uniformly lights the surface of the watch dial using patented blue electroluminescent lighting technology. It uses less battery power than most other watch illumination systems, enabling your watch battery to last longer. The Night Mode feature allows you to illuminate the Indiglo night-light for 3 seconds with any button press, regardless of the mode or function. OUr take: Pretty basic best selling Timex made, all the normal features a geek watch would have nothing new here.

For my purposes, still the best all-around digital watch out there

Review Date: December 21, 2007
Reviewer: David R. Munson, Chicago, IL, United States
I've had various incarnations of the Timex Ironman watches over the years. They take a beating and have great functionality. To me, this model has about the best practical value overall, being rather feature-laden without being overcomplicated. One distinct value of this watch over the "sleek" and similar models, is that it does NOT have an integrated band. Sure, integrated bands look cool, but if you wear the watch daily the band will start to break down after about a year and then you have to send it back to Timex for a new band. Not so with this watch. New users will have to take a little time to figure out the various functions of the watch, but once you get the idea, operation is very logical. The stopwatch is great for training, having more laps at your disposal than you're ever likely to need, multiple timers and alarms, and two time zones. These are also useful for training, but also just useful in general life (moreso than you'd think). In all, a solid choice for a digital sports watch, and an excellent value considering Amazon's prices. Highly recommended.

I've seen this watch in stores for $65. Bought it using my Amazon Prime for $43, free shipping, got it 2 days later. Its a great watch, especially the Flix system. It took me a short time to figure out the right way to flick my wrist to activate the light, but once I got it, it worked every single time. Besides the great features, its a good-looking watch also.
This is a great digital watch

Review Date: March 26, 2007
Reviewer: Steve Bailey, U.S.
I've had it for only a couple of weeks - bought it at a certain nationwide store that has a crosshair symbol as the emblem - and then accidentally saw this page on Amazon, so I thought I'd review it.

It's very comfortable as another review said.
It looks great. At first, I was a little self conscious about wearing this big thing when I first got it home and tried it on, but come to think of it, it's not that much bigger than my Seiko diver's

I'd highly recommend it. Defintely happy with it, even though I won't be using most of the many features on it.

( But I'd sure like a watch with multiple timers one of these days. Even though I sometimes use the multiple Alarms on this thing, having multiple *timers* is way more useful to me, since I like to have a timer for 40 min for a lot of the things I cook, and another timer always set at 25 min to get the clothes in the washer, and then a couple of other timers always available for whatever comes up)
great sports watch

Review Date: September 11, 2007
Reviewer: Jay Bromley, Pasadena, California United States
This is a great sports watch that is easy and intuitive to use. The interface is such that I picked up this watch and within a few minutes had figured out nearly all of the functionality. This watch has five clocks, a single shot timer, an interval timer with nine slots, a 100-lap/split chronograph and multiple alarms. The interval timer is a very nice feature and is excellent for timed interval workouts (i.e. 1 minute effort, two minutes rest, etc.) The chronograph works simultaneously with the timers, so that is nice. The face has large, easily visible characters and the FLIX system is very nice - you can turn on the Indiglo light with just a flick of the wrist.

The only minor nitpick I have (and this may be my failing) is that I can't figure out how to change which of the five clocks is shown by default - it always seems to show clock 1 and pressing the split button cycles you through the clocks. Really this is only a problem if you travel between different time zones a lot.

Overall, this watch exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend it.
Perfect for Training (Swimming) Purposes.... 5 Star for what it does as a training watch!

Review Date: January 10, 2009
Reviewer: Bruno Freitas, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
This is already my 2nd TIMEX which I use for my swimming practices..
This one beats the older model (Timex 51931 Ironman Triathlon) with some interesting changes:

1) The larger digits on this model makes it easier to read the numbers (as some mentioned to do so when running) even when I am swimming, with a quick flick of the wrist at the turn, it's possible to see the minutes and the seconds.... The older model had smaller number, thus not making it possible to do this.

2) The navigation on this model became quite easier. It was already easy on the older model but this one included instructions on screen, such as NEXT, DONE, + or - in order to advance with your practices and training... Plus a chance to change the way you want to see the information of the your laps (Laps in the big digits and splits at the smaller one, or the oposite)
A Real nice add on by TIMEX.

3) A simple but effective wrist band "clip" (the tiny piece of strap that attachs the "extra" wrist band that is left after you put the clock on)
It has a piece of rubber on the inside that locks on at the wrist band and does not make it loose or even letting it go as some other watches do sometimes. This is more effective underwater I think, as it remains the way you set your wrist, as the older model I had did not quite held in place all the time.

4) Plenty of memory (100 laps is really a nice number), maybe more then most will need but, as a swimmer I use to count splits over 100m (or yards) with many laps during one training... It is quite usefull. I go easily on 10 to 15 laps of the memory in one training.
And with the date feature, that reminds when you did these times, it is quite usefull to keep track on the training with a spreadsheet, for instance... (as I do !)

5) A really big START/SPLIT buttom that is great to press when I am swimming laps and have to press myself at each turn at the pool.
Just perfect. Never a miss !

And the feature which was already at most of the models, of the repeat countdown, and the start of a chrono, or a repeat (what I use the most) in order race agains your average rhitym inside a certain time frame that you can set it up ! And of course the flix technology, which is very good to have it... Just flick your wrist (when you set it to ON) and it will show you at night all info that you need.

It is another great watch from TIMEX and it deserves a look, specially for the price. It is worth to pay a bit more if you are like me and uses a lot of the memory for the laps on swimming pool. Maybe for runners it can be quite a lot of memory, but the price difference is worth the change, for some of the options mentioned at this review.

This is a really good watch to have..
Will you definatelly like as we all are at these reviews.
:-) It deserves the 5 stars rating !
So good, I haven't taken it off yet!

I've got some pretty nice watches. I have to admit that this Timex Ironman is probably one of my favorites because it has everything I need on the main screen. It has the time, day, date, and is all very large and readable. The indiglo is great, like on other Timex watches. I really like the band...it looks like if it ever had an issue, it could be replaced if necessary. The start/stop button is large and easy to push without having to look around for the button. The 5 alarms will keep you on time. I'm very tough on watches and this one appears to be holding up very well.

Bottom line is that it is a superb watch. You can't go wrong buying this watch!
What's not to like?

Review Date: October 31, 2007
Reviewer: Richard T. Cornfield, Monrovia, CA
I read other people's reviews before buying my Timex and as in all things in life, everyone has their opinion. One of the things I found preposterous were the comments about the band. It's designed to be secure on your wrist. The fact that the small loop kind of "locks" in the strap is a good thing. Some people complained that it was too hard to undo. I do it everyday with one hand and could do so blindfolded. If you can't get the strap undone without breaking a sweat, one handed or two, I would suggest you never leave the house because you are uncoordinated to the point of being dangerous. The large numerals on the face have also been criticized which is also a mystery to me. It simply makes reading the pertinent data easy and fast with no guess work and with a quick look. I also like the fact that it is so light that I'm not even aware of wearing it which is very good in a a sports watch. The ONLY negative I have is that you have to hit the "Stop" button twice when in interval mode and the time you want to stop on corresponds to the interval itself. Not a big deal. I hit the stop button twice in succession. It's a fine product that does what it's supposed to.
The perfect sports watch

Review Date: October 26, 2007
Reviewer: Forever Sport, Gainesville, FL
I have owned the previous model of the watch for over 6 years and it is still my main training watch. The reason is that it is simply the best training watch out there right now. The FLIX system, which allows you to turn on the back light with a flick of the wrist, is invaluable when I am riding a bike or running at night.

The 100 lap memory lends itself perfectly to interval training (say if you are sprinting 100 m, resting for 30 secs and running again). In addition, the watch offers an interval countdown that lets you set multiple countdowns, which can be set to repeat (useful for timed sets, e.g., jump rope for 1 min, rest for 1 min, repeat 5 times). In addition, the watch has dual time and 5 alarms (I mostly use them as birthday reminders). Also, the watch has held up to biking, running, swimming, white water rafting, and the toughest test, two three year old boys tinkering with it :-).

Lastly, the newer version (featured here), has a bigger display than my earlier model. Also, if you are looking to buy a watch to help you train better, the Timex IRONMAN Triathlon Data Link Watch T53722 is be a worthy competitor.
Superb Value

As far as watches go, it's hard to beat this watch for the money. I'm a very active individual, and have considered going to the next level with my watch (i.e. heart rate, altimeter, thermometer) but have been reluctant to pull the trigger on a $300+ watch. So I stick with this timeless (no pun intended) classic. At the end of the day, what makes the watch so good, is that it just works! Anyone who is remotely familiar with a watch knows that $43 is an excellent price for something that you'll have 5 years (at least). And for that money the watch does exactly what you want it to. The watch has a timer, chronograph, dual time zones, and excellent alarms (you can set 5 different alarms). It is my go-to companion at the gym or outdoors. I had a FLIX about 4 years ago that I lost, and replaced with this model. This model's Indiglo/Night Light/Whatever-you-call-it is phenomenal. My old FLIX was not easy to see with the indiglo at night, but this watch has fantastic contrast when the indiglo is on.

And the indiglo is easy to use without actually pressing the button every time. By pressing and holding the indiglo button for three seconds the watch goes in to night mode. In night mode any button press, or a flick of the wrist turns on the indiglo for three full seconds. It gives you an opportunity to check the time, your pace while running, whatever you may need. It may seem gimicky, but the FLIX feature is actually very nice. Imagine walking down the sidewalk, holding hands with your child or significant other, and you want to check the time. Just flick your wrist and look at your watch - no need to let go of their hand and press and hold a button. I know that seems minor, but it will amaze you how much you'll love the FLIX feature.

To comment on the alarms. You can have up to five programmed in the watch, and they are easily activated or deactivated with the push of a button. The alarm itself is great, because it's annoying as heck. It's more than just a beep-beep, it's this bizarre, loud almost music-like tone that is certain to wake you.

In a nutshell, you can't go wrong with this item. Would make a great Birthday or Christmas/Holiday gift for anyone high school and up.

BUY!
Great running watch

I bought this solely as a running watch, and I've been really pleased so far. It's a little big for my taste to just wear around as a casual timepiece, though I might do so on occasion anyway.

It's apparent this watch was designed for activity. The strap feels solid, and it stays in place on a sweaty wrist. There's a handy strap lock to keep the slider from moving, which is a small but thoughtful detail. I appreciate the large numbers for easy quick glances, and the start/split button is ideally placed for quick access. I also notice the buttons require just enough pressure (and are placed high enough) that you won't activate them by accident.

Having a 100-lap memory may seem like overkill, but it's actually quite useful. You can store individual workouts by date, and you can freely track splits by whatever increment you want over many miles.

The Flix feature is nifty and works as advertised. I've seen the complaints of battery life, so that's my only worry going forward. Regardless, this is a great exercise watch.

My husband is VERY picky about the watches he uses to time his swim laps. The lap button has to be just-so, the right size in the right location. This watch fits the bill perfectly, and he can time 100 laps, splits for interval training, and everything else he wants to keep statistics on. Looks good, too!

It has a very large display screen witch helps you read the time while running, biking or swimming. I definetly would recommend this watch to anyone.

Reviewer: Robert Swanson,
I've been wearing a Timex Ironman watch for the last 20 years. Each time one wears out, I replace it with another. I've owned G-Shocks, expensive dive watches (Rolex and others) and more. The Ironman is a very versatile and reliable watch. This model incorporates some new features that are a nice improvement over my last one. The new Indiglo system causes the numbers to illuminate, instead of a lighted background with dark numbers. This makes reading it in low light much easier. The new model also has a dual timezone feature that is easily toggled by pushing the large start/split button. It also features 5 different alarm times, a useful feature if you have several critical events throughout the day. As a dive watch it functions perfectly well, although I recommend one of the velcro straps to give you more length to wrap it around a wetsuit and a single strap design will keep your watch on even if you lose one pin. For such an inexpensive item, it's a great piece of gear.

I have owned this watch for several years now and could not be happier with it. It is no longer my everyday go-to-work watch, but I do wear it fairly often for running, hiking, biking and other outdoor activities. I replaced the original stiff plastic band with a "Timex Expedition" Velcro fastwrap band for greater comfort and easier tightening/loosening ability. With the Velcro band cinched up, the watch fits snugly and comfortably and I barely know it's there while running, etc. Setting the time and alarms is extremely easy and user-friendly, given the large, clearly labeled and easy to push buttons, and the helpful on-screen directions such as "next" and "done" that appear over each applicable button. Unlike some other reviewers, I have no problem with the relatively subtle Indiglo light. Using the backlight, it has never been difficult for me to make out the time in dark or dusky situations, and since I don't rely on the watch to illuminate dark hallways, etc., I think the light is more than adequate.

This is the 3rd or 4th of these that I've bought.
This has the perfect combination of features that I need.
I especially need the interval timers that I use with my clients and students for different exercise drills. All of it's features work as they should. The watch is comfortable and the dual time feature works great when I'm traveling to a differnt time zone.

The only reason that I've had to replace them is that usually around the 2yr mark, it dies and I figure that I'll just get a new one rather than send it in or get a battery or whatever.

I hope that if and when they quit making this model, that they continue with a new model that still included the interval timers and dual time.

Like many forms of their watches, I really think that if Timex is smart about their decission making on what watches get what features, they'll find that this one is needed in the line-up...good work so far...

Graduated from the original Ironman Flix- the size and illumination of the numbers work much better- functions are all about the same as the older model but easier to navigate. The only complaint is that the band is a little ornery (some extra notch that secures the band also makes it harder to get off- probably could cut it off) but overall very nice upgrade.

The housing for my original Casio from 25 years ago finally disintegrated and I went out seeking a sport/casual replacement. I love this watch. So far, I've only set the time on the watch and haven't used the timer or alarm features, but after a quick glance at the manual TIME 1 was set and another longer look, TIME 2 was set to another time zone for a vacation to the other coast. The big digits are great, but the thing I like the most is the weight; it's light, comfortable and seems well made. Will I get two and a half decades of use out of this? I dunno, but at this point, it gets 5 stars from me!

Well...I did a lot of research before purchasing this watch. I was replacing one of their "shock" models that I purchased about 4 years ago. It has a lot of the function of the "shock" model....but the feature I like the best is that it has 5 alarms that can be set for weekdays, weekend, or for specific days of the week. The FLIX mode is cool too, but must be set each day. It automatically goes off. I had looked at more expensive watches, but liked the quality and durability of TIMEX. Besides, my wife would rather I spend the difference on her :-)

I have had many versions of the Timex Ironman over the past 15 or so years, and have been very happy with them. I did a short detour with a sleek Nike watch but found the button operation to be less intuitive and when the Nike band broke the watch was finished.

The primary benefit of this watch is the larger numbers, which I can read without reading glasses. I also know which buttons to push for timer, alarm, lap split, etc., and it's very intuitive. Great watch, highly recommended, especially with the deal where they throw in the free hat!

The lap button is easy to pressure during my lap swims. Granted my splits are a bit off because I have to modify my swim stroke to count my laps, but is very useful to gauge my performance. The timers and two time zones are very useful. Setting the watch is easy and very intuitive. I have not read the instruction manual yet. The watch looks nice and is very light. It does not feel like you are wearing a watch, but I am comparing it to my normal daily Casio Pathfinder Solar Power watch. I would recommend it to anyone looking to buy a new watch or a sports training watch.

I conduct psychological experiments and need a watch with large digits. This is it. It is easy to synchronize it with the official USA clock on the internet, which is a necessity for me. I also wanted a watch that lights up, since I like to know what time it is when I wake up in the middle of the night. I can't speak to the other features, since I use this for one, sole purpose: precision time keeping. This watch delivers.
Best Rubber Watch, Ever...

Review Date: November 6, 2009
Reviewer: Casp, Akron, OH USA
Alright, quickly now...

I have worn rubber watches since the ground-breaking debut of the Casio J-50 Jogger/Pacer watch. Anyone who wears rubber watches knows this drill: wear them until the battery goes; attempt battery replacement; throw watch away and purchase new one (and take advantage of innovations transpiring in the meantime).

This is, far and away, the best rubber utility watch I have purchased. The display is LARGE and has no equal that I could find. The numerous functions and mode features are easily accessible and thoughtfully placed. The construction is rugged and designed for rigorous wear. This watch also ticked (seemingly timelessly for a single battery) w/o interruption for three years before... THE DREADED DEATH OF BATTERY LEADING TO OPEN SURGERY.

Well, I did it! IT LIVES!!! I must say that it was a pain in the a** and requires several deep breaths to contain one's frustration. The band does, indeed, have to be removed and is secured by spring-loaded pins that can release the spring-loaded pin portion (to be lost forever in the carpet) quite easily. The battery replacement involves the usual, delicate procedure to emplace the new battery (CR25) typical of such watches, and the screw heads on the back enclosure are especially small. But, nevertheless, it can be done. Hopefully, I won't have to face this coming-of-age challenge again.

I highly recommend this watch for any outdoor (or indoor, for that matter) enthusiast.
Very well thought out watch for interval training

Review Date: November 16, 2009
Reviewer: Neil Gunton, Eureka, CA
I bought this watch to help me with the "Couch to 5K" (c25k) running program. This entails nine weeks of running three times per week. It progresses from a very easy start (first week starts with brisk five minute walk, then alternate 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes). Then the second week it's 90 seconds of jogging, 2 minutes of walking, and so on, until by the end of it you're running 3 miles or 20 minutes non-stop. It's a nice program for people who are out of shape. So I wanted a watch that could help me time all this, and this model does the trick perfectly. It's been a while since I owned a digital watch, and I'm impressed with how much thought has gone into the design. The little things jumped out at me when I started playing with it - for example, pressing the 'Reset' button will show in big letters 'HOLD to reset' while you have it pressed in, which makes it obvious how it works. If you know the general idea of how these things usually work, then you really don't need a manual. Here's a quick rundown:

The mode button cycles through the screens - Time, Chrono (stopwatch), Timer (countdown), Inttmp (Interval timer) and Alarm. If you stop at any of those, then after a few seconds, pressing Mode again will take you back to the main Time screen. I really like the feel of the buttons - they have a very satisfying clicky kind of action, without being too stiff.

Other nice touches: The countdown timer has the option of either stopping, repeating, or going automatically to Chrono (stopwatch) at the end. That last one is ingenious - it means I can set the countdown for 5 minutes to do my warmup walk, and then it'll go straight into stopwatch so I can tell how far I am into my total workout time. When the countdown finishes and the chrono begins, I can then switch over to the interval timer mode and start that program. For the first week, I am setting two intervals - 60 seconds and 90 seconds, and repeating at the end. While the intervals are running, the watch displays which interval you're on (1 or 2 in this case) and which rep too. Also, the different timers can be running simultaneously - so the chrono is keeping track of my total time, while the interval timers give me cues for when to run and when to walk. The beeps are very audible and hard to miss in a normal street environment.

Even for later weeks, when it gets more complicated, this watch will still be able to do what I need - for example, week 4 has the five minute warmup walk followed by jog 3 minutes, walk 90 seconds, jog 5 minutes, walk 2.5 minutes, jog 3 minutes, walk 90 seconds, jog 5 minutes. That is 7 different times, which can be expressed using the interval timers - there are nine, so just use 7 and do one single interval (rather than the usual reps).

I don't use alarms much, but there are five of them and they are very easy to set and turn on and off. Also, you can set each alarm to be active on weekdays, or weekends, or specific days of the week. I guess if you had a different schedule for each working day, then you could set an alarm for each one in theory.

The watch feels good on your wrist - it's not the smallest, but it's not as clunky as I was fearing either. I have pretty small wrists, but it doesn't feel too big at all.

I like the light feature, and the Flix function seems to work well too - you don't have to flick your wrist very hard to make it happen. That might be useful in situations where you only have one hand free.

I really like how the watch display is very simple, and the numbers are large and easy to read. Very nice for when you just want to take a quick glance while on the move without having to squint or decipher what the heck it is supposed to be showing. A lot of watches have little gimmicky graphics that look good in the store but actually just waste valuable space. This watch just shows you what you want to see, in a very easy to read manner.

The Chrono has 100 lap memories, but I have not used this yet. I guess it would be useful if you are doing a lot of running around a track.

All in all I am loving this watch - it's really hard to think of anything they got wrong here. It seems like someone put a lot of thought into it. If you need something for doing interval training, particularly running outside, then this is just the thing. I don't know how noticeable the beeps would be in a loud gym environment, but it seems pretty loud to me. Since it's so close to you, I think it would have to be pretty loud music for you not to be able to hear it.

And, of course, it's a fine wristwatch too. I'm tickled pink at finding this thing, it's a real gem.

Update: After a couple of weeks, I noticed that the interval timer rep number would go a little screwy when running on colder mornings. For example, on rep 2, it would read something random like Rep 1.35 or Rep .43. Otherwise it was fine. I think this is something related to the temperature, since it works fine when testing inside, or outside once it's warmer. I still love the watch, though, so I'm returning this one for a refund and buying a new one in the meantime so I don't have any time without it (otherwise you have to wait until they receive the old unit before they send the new one).
Ok, add my 5 stars

The watch itself is beautiful without being flashy. It's easy to use, very intuitive.

I wanted a light sport watch that I can wear all day. I wanted a large display and at least 100 M water resistance. I also wanted a countdown timer and forward and reverse setting buttons. This watch has all of these features and it is very comfortable to wear. I haven't had a chance to run with it yet, but I can tell this will make a good running watch. The indiglo feature is very high tech and cool looking. The strap looks nice and it doesn't have that Timex Triathlon symbol that I was never a big fan of (it's on the strap holder very discreetly).

I am very pleased with this purchase!

I've been using this watch for about a year now, including three marathons (Cleveland, San Francisco & NYC), and it has worked flawlessly.

The functions make sense and are easy to use. The display is large, clear and the Timex Indiglo (TM) really does work wonders. For whatever points this loses to style - the watch is tough - it's designed to be worn and ran.

The 'flix' light activation is more useful than I expected, and very well implemented. It lights up when you want it to and only when you want it to. My only complaint here is that you can't just activate that feature continuously or at least for a certain hour range (e.g.: 7PM to 7AM). Although activating it isn't difficult - just hold a button for a few seconds.....just being lazy.

The only other 'complaint' I have is that I have never been able to delete a single lap. If you hit the 'split' button at the end of a run rather then 'stop', then it throws off the average & best lap. The watch PROBABLY has a means to delete a single lap, but I lost the instructions long ago and have never figured out how. Overall though, the interface is well designed and works great, just remember to hit 'stop'.

I used a timex Ironman watch years ago. I needed an inexpensive daily watch with an alarm. I compared some Ironman watches. This particular watch seems little bulky. Yet, it is light. It has so many features. I like having so many alarms.(5).I also use timer a lot. It keeps the last timer used in its memory, which is great.
You need to read the manual to figure chronometer out. It is little complicated, but you get used to it.

It is pretty accurate. The watch is one to two seconds slow every week. It is very easy to adjust it. I have an atomic watch at home. Usually, twice a month I correct the time.

I recommend this watch.

I've tried to wear watches in the past, but for some reason, never could get in the habit of wearing it. The Timex Ironman T5E231 turns out to be the exception. I wear this watch everyday and to every activity I may have throughout the day: work, school, church, the gym, running, and just around the house. The fact that it's water-resistant is very convenient--it makes it easy to keep it clean. I love timing my laps when I run and being able to store the information so I can keep a record of how I do each time. I've also found it really handy to time my rest periods between sets while I'm in the gym. I don't waste as much time and I feel like I get a better workout that way. The Indiglo night light works really well too. This has been easily the best watch purchase I've ever made.
great item and service

This is a great watch if you run. It gives 100 splits with the total time, best time and average time per split.

I like it, it does all I wanted it to, the only complaint I have is that it is a large watch, but it was well worth the price.
This is a great watch!

Great watch! Fits well and looks good. I got the watch as a sporty alternative to my dress watch. I also got it for triathlon training. The Flix lighting system takes a little getting used to, but it convenient once you do. I have a larger wrist and the band fits well. It may be a little big for anyone with small wrists.
Excellent Watch for Runners

I purchased the Timex Ironman Flix because of a need to time cumulative time and split times. It is an excellent watch and does all the functions I need for my running desires. The watch looks good, is easy to see with it's large display and the buttons are simple and easy to get to while I am running. This is an excellent value on this watch as well with features costing many times more on several other watch brands. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this watch to anyone.

I was in need of a watch so I could keep track of my miles and I was wanting to get one that would last a good while and hopefully be able to wear it around as a casual watch. This watch did this and so much more. The fact that it has a lab memory is very useful, much more useful than I thought it would be. Flix is nice but I find that I rarely use it. The watch face is rather big but you get accustomed to it rather quickly and find it nice now. It is very scratch resistan and it has survived me swimming, camping and many miles of running. A very excellent watch.
Good basic exercise watch

Reviewer: TQ,
I love this watch! It's a little bigger than my older Ironman Watches but it's very practical---large display on screen, securing mechanism on strap, and easy to use functions. Everything is very intuitive and straight forward and the memory splits with storage are awesome for working out. The Flix system is cool, but I haven't really found much of a need for it yet. Overall, for the price it's a great watch.
just a really good watch

Reviewer: Gilbert,
I have gone through 4 Ironman watches since 1996 0r 1997 and I am sticking to it. When the battery runs out, I just get a new one. It's cheap but very dependable and durable. I have gone through three different war zones with it and I have gone through temperatures between -50degrees and 120degrees, and been around the world three times with it...I love this watch!
A very nice watch

This is a very handsome and nice fitting watch. I was looking for something to replace my Timex Ironman 'Sleek' watch that served me well for years but the stainless face fell off one day. This Ironman model has the same nice display (big numbers) and functions as my previous watch but fits my wrist much better with a nicely designed curve in the band mounts. It does not slide around my wrist like my sleek watch did. The lens is recessed to help protect it from scratches. I highly recommend it.
Great for the $$$

I work on construction sites every day, so this watch really gets a beating. As the old commercials said, "It takes a licking and keeps on ticking". AND, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to use the features of this watch.
Simply the BEST!!

The Timex Ironman 100 lap FLIX is simply the best. I've tried others and they just don't match up. This watch has so many features that I use on a daily basis. First, the digital display is large enough for my old eyes to read it w/o glasses. The 100 lap chronograph feature is great for me as a track coach because, in addition to logging my own runs, I can store splits from my kids workouts. The timer is great for a variety of activities. The 5 alarms are great!! This is the best watch of it's type out there!!
my running watch

This is the best running/workout watch I've used. (I used a Nike Triax one previously.) I have used it to train for a half marathon and use it on all of my runs. It's quite easy to figure out how to use it. I don't really use the FLIX capabilities. The buttons are easy to press. The face is very readable while running because of the large face. The indiglo works great when you are running at night. The synthetic rubber band material is sturdy without feeling too stiff. The memory holds your previous workouts including the date which is a nice bonus if you need to transfer the info to on an online log and you don't have a chance to do it right away.
